Women's Health Specialty

Women's Health Physical Therapy is a specialized area that addresses pelvic floor dysfunction. There are two main types of pelvic floor dysfunction. One is incontinence, which involves weakness of the pelvic floor muscles and the second is pelvic pain, which involves pelvic floor muscle spasms.

Urinary incontinence affects many women of all ages. There are three types of urinary incontinence, stress, urge, and mixed incontinence. Stress incontinence involves the loss of urine with an activity such as cough or sneeze. Urge incontinence is the strong sudden need to urinate. However, many women have mixed, which involves both types.

Temporary incontinence may be caused by several conditions including childbirth, medication side effects and urinary tract infection. Chronic incontinence may be a symptom of bladder weakness, nerve disorders, or pelvic floor muscle weakness.

An individual treatment plan is devised based on subjective and objective evaluation. This plan may include:

  • Pelvic Floor Muscle Re-Education
  • Biofeedback
  • Muscle Stimulation
  • Manual Therapy
  • Therapeutic Exercises
  • Patient Education

Common conditions which may cause pelvic pain symptoms include endometriosis, adhesions, interstitial cystitis, irritable bowel syndrome, vaginismus, and vulvodynia. At GPT, we have had success in the treatment of these dysfunctions.
